There is nothing in your basket

From celebrated portrait photographer Perou, TUNNEL VISION offers a rare and intoxicating portrait of England’s underpasses, forcing us to look twice at spaces rarely heralded for their beauty. The book is introduced by, and is a collaboration with, Karl Hyde of dance music duo Underworld.

Photographed at night, these tunnels spring to live with eerie energy - you can almost hear the ominous hum of the broken strip-lighting and the prickling silence of these desolate, urban landscapes. These unloved spaces are notoriously menacing and graffiti-ridden, yet through Perou’s lens the architecture draws our attention and the light at the end of the tunnel appears almost ethereal. This forensic portrait of non-places allows us to see beauty in the forgotten and the derelict.

The idea for TUNNEL VISION was sparked between friends Perou and Hyde when Perou shot the album cover for Hyde’s debut solo album, Edgeland, featuring an underpass at night. Perou has now shot over 200 underpasses across England. The photographs are accompanied by text of graffiti found on site and the latitude and longitude of the location of the underpass.

Born in the UK in 1970, PEROU is regarded as one of the world’s leading portrait photographers having worked with numerous artists, bands and personalities including Al Gore, David Attenborough, Marilyn Manson, Led Zeppelin, Coldplay, Damien Hirst, Gillian Anderson, David Beckham, Jay-Z, Missy Elliott, the Spice Girls, Tracey Emin and U2.

Artist and musician KARL HYDE is a founding member of British electronic group Underworld. Hyde is also a solo artist and has made albums with Brian Eno and Matthew Herbert. Alongside Rick Smith, he contributed to the score for the London 2012 Summer Olympics Opening Ceremony. Hyde is a founding member of the multi-discipline design and film collective Tomato, and he has also published several books.
