Bet you thought the whole 3D trend was just so the latest cutesy CGI characters could be brought to life for all the family to enjoy? Wrong. As with so much technological innovation, it’s mostly about finding new ways to kill people or, as in this instance, to get a better look at breasts. A new book of private slides from the collection of Gil Elvgren, the mid-20th century American artist best known for kitsch paintings of busty gals in sailor hats and cowboy chaps, shows that we’ve always been interested in the idea of making imagery more, how shall we say, tangible.
